Hungary

Amid the reshaping of the global immigration landscape, Hungary attracts more applicants seeking status and asset optimization with its low threshold, high flexibility and Schengen travel benefits.

Why

  • Living costs and housing prices are lower than Western Europe; German retirees are moving to Hungary due to tax and high living costs.

  • Foreign workers mainly in manufacturing and EV industry, demand continues to rise. In 2023, foreign worker permits accounted for about 69% of all first-type residence permits.

  • Restarted "Golden Residence" program, minimum €250,000 for a 10-year residence permit, renewable.

Main Immigration Pathways

1. Investor Migration (Golden Residence / Guest Investor Program)

Hungary’s Investor Migration program, also known as the Golden Residence or Guest Investor Program, offers long-term residency to individuals who make significant financial contributions to the country. Investment options include purchasing an approved real estate fund certificate for €250,000, acquiring residential property for €500,000, or making a €1 million donation to higher education, research, or cultural initiatives. Successful applicants receive an initial 10-year residence permit—with the option to renew—enjoying minimal stay requirements and the ability to bring family members, who can also live and work in Hungary.

2. High-skilled Talent Visa (Hungarian Card / EU Blue Card)

Hungary provides pathways for highly skilled professionals through the Hungarian Card and the EU Blue Card programs. The Hungarian Card is aimed at individuals with advanced education or expertise in fields such as engineering, IT, sports, and the arts, and provides options for family reunion, renewal, and eventual permanent residence. The EU Blue Card is specifically for professionals, particularly in IT and related sectors, and can sometimes waive standard education requirements. Both permits are typically valid for up to three years and are renewable.

3. Cross-border Commuter Visa (National Card)

Hungary’s Cross-border Commuter Visa, or National Card, caters to citizens of neighboring and select countries, such as Belarus, Bosnia, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Russia, and Ukraine. This visa allows for daily or regular cross-border commuting for work, with no occupational quotas. It supports family reunion, offers renewal options, and provides a flexible framework for cross-border employment.
